Essential Information on the Piqua Shawnee Tribe


A great number of Native Americans tribes today want to explore their history. They want to find out their culture and traditions as well as their effect on their daily lives. The Piqua Shawnee tribe is one of the five divisions of the large Shawnee tribe. The Shawnee recognized as an American Indian tribe.

Originally, the Shawnee tribe settled in Ohio, Alabama, western Pennsylvania, and Kentucky but was later forced to spread due to conflict. Today, the Piqua Shawnee tribe has about 300 members who mainly live in Alabama with some of them living in other parts of North America.  The tribe has members living in Indiana, Texas, Tennessee, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, and South Carolina.

The tribe is recognized by the state of Alabama and was officially recognized by the Indian Affairs Commission in Alabama in the year 2001. It was officially recognized in Kentucky in 1991. Also, the US Census Bureau acknowledged the Piqua Shawnee as a separate American Indian tribe in the 2010 census.

The modern-day Piqua Shawnee Tribe have varying family backgrounds. A significant number of them live laid back lifestyles in outlying rural areas where there is minimal government scrutiny and their neighbors are not too curious.  The Piqua Shawnee people are devoted to the Shawnee culture, language, and traditions. They hold numerous cultural events throughout the year with the aim of upholding and retaining their unique heritage and cultural values. These include educational and cultural programs for the youth, elders, and members of their tribal community. Additionally, because they are widely dispersed, the Piqua Shawnee tribe hosts at least four gatherings each year in alternating geographical locations in order to access all of their members.

Like most Native American tribes, the Shawnee people have their own government, policies, laws, and services. However, they are also US citizens and thus, they must abide by the law in the country. The Piqua Shawnee tribe comprises of clans that live in several states in the US and Canada. Although the Piqua Shawnee people have a principal chief and a second chief, they have a Tribal Council that is responsible for maintaining their tribal government. The council is composed of clan chiefs, clan mothers, and an advisory body commonly referred to as the council of elders.

All the activities of the Tribal Council are run in accordance with the clan protocol. All issues are discussed and taken before the clans for deliberation and consideration.
